U14s and Hils scoop top prizes
Congratulations to the U14s and to Hils Everitt for topping the polls in their respective categories in the prestigious Courier Sports awards for 2009.
The U14s won the "Young Team of the Year" prize, while 1st XV manager Hils scooped the "Unsung Hero" award.
According to coach John Rugg, this has been an excellent year for the U14s. After reaching the semi-finals of the Kent competition, conceding only two tries on the way, they then won the unofficial 3rd-place play-off. The highlight of the season, however, was the Italian national competition at Benetton Treviso. Once again, they reached the semi-final and once again they won the 3rd-place play-off - this time posting a rare, if not unique, victory for Sevenoaks over Milan! This season, they are currently unbeaten and have produced some fantastic rugby against the best in Kent.

Hils, a former captain of Kent's women's rugby team, has been looking after the 1st XV for more than a decade now. Her main objective is always to make sure that the boys don't have to worry about anything other than the match on Saturdays. As well as making sure all the kit and equipment is in good order, her legendary "bottomless" ruck-sack contains everything from spare studs to energy sweets, from inhalers to every kind of tape you can imagine, not to mention a large selection of kicking tees. During the week, Hils looks after matters such as player registration and the administration of the gym sponsorship scheme. Highlights for Hils have been organising three trips to Jersey, including the famous 62-31 victory, and the 2005 promotion play-off against Effingham and Leatherhead.
Well done to both, and congratulations also to the U7s and to Will Grist, who were both short-listed for awards. The awards will be presented at a Gala Dinner at the Salomons country-house conference venue on February 24th.
